Welcome to the Deaf Central Division

The Deaf Central Division of USDB provides a Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) program for deaf and hard of hearing children and their families in the Salt Lake valley.

Our preschool program, located at Upland Terrace Elementary School in Granite School District, is for students ages three through five.  With a focus on listening through audition, children develop speech and receptive and expressive language.  Parents meet weekly with teachers and discover new ways to encourage listening and language development during all waking hours with their child. Certified LSL therapists provide one-on-one therapy for every preschool child on a daily basis.

At Mill Creek Elementary School, also in Granite School District, students K – 6th grade are served in a magnet school program.  Integration with non-disabled peers is encouraged by both USD and Mill Creek staff and may include recess, lunch and assemblies for some, while other students may integrate in academic areas according to need.  Again, classes are taught using Listening and Spoken Language methods, with a focus on receptive and expressive language development and developing academic skills related to the core curriculum.

Our Outreach program provides services to students mainstreamed in their home districts in neighborhood schools.  USDB serves students according to goals listed on each child’s IEP, which may include working individually with a student to address speech, language or listening goals as well as collaborating with the classroom teacher, school staff and parents to provide a successful experience for the child with hearing loss.  They may also provide technical assistance in the form of classroom sound/field systems or personal FM systems for students who may have Section 504 plans.  These services are provided by Itinerant Teachers for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to districts in the Salt Lake Valley.

If you have any questions regarding any of our services please contact Betsy Sutherland, Program Director at our USDB offices:  801-464-2026 or email betsys@usdb.org.
