Expanded Core Curriculum
Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC)
The ECC is a specialized curriculum designed for students with vision impairments, including those with deafblindness. It includes nine key areas addressing their unique needs and is applicable for students ages birth to 21.
The ECC focuses on essential skills that students with vision impairments need to thrive at home, school, and in the community, complementing the academic curriculum. It is nationally recognized as a crucial component of education for these students.
"As society rapidly evolves, we must ensure children with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of life. High standards are necessary for them to succeed in the global 21st-century society." - Foreword to The National Agenda
The Utah School for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) provides support for ECC instruction through Outreach and Deafblind divisions. Our Expanded Core Services Team offers direct teaching, training, and activities statewide, including in-person, hybrid, and virtual sessions for students, parents, and teachers. All programs are free for Utah students. We work closely with local teachers to deliver high-quality ECC instruction and resources for families.
