Visiting Washington, DC for Freshmen and Sophomores that are Deaf and Hard of Hearing!

Deaf and hard of hearing students around the State of Utah have the unique opportunity to visit Washington, DC, and learn more about the Capitol of the United States of America. We are inviting Freshmen and Sophomore students that are deaf or hard of hearing to participate in the opportunity from February 21 – 26, 2022.

Freshmen and sophomore deaf and hard of hearing students have an amazing opportunity to take a 6 day educational international trip to Washington, DC February 21 – 26, 2022

This trip is primarily supported by USDB Enrichment Funds and monitored by the Administration and Advisory Council of USDB.  However, we do expect that each student will either fundraise or pay $100 to attend this trip. This amount will be due by December 1, 2021.

We want to ensure that students will be respectful and use this as an educational teaching tool.  Below is the list of requirements that need to be achieved in order for a student to attend. 

Requirements to Attend Educational Trip to Washington, DC, February 21 – 26, 2022:

___  Submit an application to participate by December 1, 2021.

___  Physically able to travel long distances and complete the activities as outlined

___  Pay or fundraise $100 to USDB by February 1, 2022. 

       USDB is not responsible for any fundraising activities. This is the responsibility of the parents and students.  

___  ‘C’ grade average or better for all classes each quarter.  No ‘F’s in any class

___  Regular attendance at school with no unexcused absences

___  Good behavior on transportation.

___  Signed paperwork from parents giving permission to attend the activity and signed an agreement that the student will adhere to the highest behavior expectations.

___  Write a research paper and present about Washington, DC to classmates and the Advisory Council.

Absorb the classical atmosphere of our Capital City. Stay on the campus of Gallaudet University, one of the deaf meccas in the world. Experience a deaf-owned restaurant. See the timeless sights of Washington DC such as memorials and museums, as well as the Library of Congress, Supreme Court, White House, and the US Capitol.

FEBRUARY 21 • • •

Depart Salt Lake City in the morning. After your arrival into DCA, you’d be transferred to your hotel.

Welcome dinner at a Deaf-owned Italian restaurant in McLean.

FEBRUARY 22 • • • Grand tour of the Capital City! Stops include Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, MLK Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam War Veterans Memorial, and Korean War Veterans Memorial. Drive past White House and Washington Monument. After lunch, we head down to Mount Vernon, home of President George Washington. If time allows, we stop at Arlington Cemetery and US Marine Corps War Memorial Free time in the evening in Georgetown.

FEBRUARY 23 • • • Private tour of the US Capitol with staff from the office of Senator Mike Lee. Then we head over to Gallaudet University for a campus tour and lunch. Group photo in front of Chapel Hall before visiting National Deaf Life Museum and Linda K. Jordan Gallery. Stop by the Bison Store (university bookstore). Check out the Deaf Starbucks coffee shop on H Street. Dinner and free time at Union Station.

FEBRUARY 24 • • • Morning visit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. After lunch, we visit the United States Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, and Botanic Garden. Dinner at Mozzeria, a Deaf owned pizzeria.

FEBRUARY 25 • • • Morning visit at the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) office in Silver Spring. After lunch, we visit Ford’s Theatre where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Farewell dinner.

FEBRUARY 26 • • • Check out of the hotel. Late morning visit at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. After late lunch, we transfer to DCA for your flight back to SLC.
