In August 2022, Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind announced a new Deaf School in Saint George, Utah. This program will be known as the Southern Utah School of the Deaf. This school offers direct communication with teachers and peers in spoken language and American Sign Language, depending upon the needs of the students which is determined by their Individualized Education Plan (IEP)Team.

SUSD is committed to promoting and fostering a fully accessible learning environment with the goal of students becoming proficient in a language or languages that best meet their needs: American Sign Language (ASL) and/or English. SUSD offers multiple branches of our program to meet the language needs of students: Listening & Spoken Language for students needing to focus on spoken English, ASL/English for students needing to focus on on ASL as their primary language with written English fluency focused on, and/or a bimodal program where students can get both ASL and spoken English instruction. Deaf children are cultural beings; we support linguistic, cultural, and social components to help deaf and hard of hearing students become productive and well-educated members of a rich cultural minority as well as society at large.
